Travel Advisory: Zika

Zika

The Zika virus is a disease primarily spread to people through mosquito bites. The symptoms are usually mild; however, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has issued reports that indicate Zika may be linked to serious birth defects in babies of mothers who were infected with this virus while pregnant.

The CDC has issued a notice to women who are pregnant and couples thinking about becoming pregnant to avoid unnecessary travel to two small areas in Miami-Dade County, Florida, including a 0.5-square-mile section of Wynwood, Florida and a section of Miami Beach, Florida.

According to Florida Governor Rick Scott, “Florida has a proven track record of success when it comes to managing similar mosquito-borne viruses.  We will continue to keep our residents and visitors safe, utilizing constant surveillance and aggressive strategies, such as increased mosquito spraying, that have allowed our state to fight similar viruses.”

Visit The USA continues to monitor the situation and stay apprised of the latest updates in order communicate appropriately with our international partner network and to be an information source for international travelers.
